Purpose

The Canadian Jazz Archives Network (CJAN) has been established to work with York University Libraries in collecting jazz related material and to play a strong role in networking, promotion, and outreach to the jazz community at large, including individuals (researchers or collectors) and organizations.

The collection will be accessible to the public, and will include music on disc, tape and piano rolls, plus published music, band arrangements, books, periodicals, catalogues, research manuscripts, personal scrapbooks, correspondence, photographs and all ephemera that would assist research into jazz in Canada.

CJAN’s vision is to

·        Support jazz by making the collection accessible for research and study
·        Provide a primary study resource for musicologists researching jazz music, social studies and related sound documentation in Canada
·        Enhance York University’s efforts in the promotion and appreciation of jazz music
·        Give jazz music and musicians recognition thus preserving and promoting jazz in its varied aspects

 CJAN activities will include

·        Giving assistance in the documentation and verification of data prior to the publication of books, journals, essays, monographs, liner notes and publicity material
·        Directing television and radio broadcasters to the resources of the archives/collection when they are preparing broadcasts and live concerts
·        Furnishing research both for updating and/or compiling of jazz and jazz related discographies and bibliographies
·        Initiating a Canadian Jazz Oral History Project
·        Maintaining growth of the holdings by coordinating the acquisition of vintage original recordings from private holdings, estates, commercially available current releases and publications past and present
·        Organizing an outreach programme whereby expertise is delivered on particular interests or topics
·        Compiling a jazz film/video/DVD collection focusing mainly on jazz in Canada
·        Establishing a web site relating specifically to the CJAN project
·        Working toward establishing a Canadian Jazz Hall of Fame.

CJAN and York University Libraries look forward to co-operatively developing what is expected to be the foremost collection of jazz related material in Canada.
